Prime Minister gives green light to Quang Tri airport project

The airport is expected to be operational by 2030 with a capacity of one million passengers and 3,100 tons of cargo per year.

The government has authorized the central province People’s Committee Quang Tri to conduct a pre-feasibility study for the construction of Quang Tri Airport under the public-private partnership (PPP) financing mechanism.

The government approved the proposal by Quang Tri province and assigned the provincial administration to implement the project after consulting with relevant ministries.

According to the prime ministerial decision issued recently, the Ministry of Transport and the provincial People's Committee are tasked with studying the timetable for the construction of the airport in consultation with the ministries of Planning and Investment and Finance and relevant agencies, which must be concided with the country's air transport planning for the 2021-30 period, with a vision to 2050 to ensure efficiency and viability.

Quang Tri Airport has a total investment of VND4.4 trillion (US$191 million). Financing of the airport project will involve private resources, in line with the government's plan to summon private investors to support the development of the country's transportation infrastructure.

In March, the MoT approved the detailed plan to build the Quang Tri airport.

According to the decision, the projected Quang Tri airport will be a joint-use airport, covering 316ha in Gio Quang commune, Gio Linh district. It will be a 4C category airport under the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) classification.

The airport is expected to be operational by 2030 with a capacity of one million passengers and 3,100 tons of cargo per year.
