Completion of $2.79-billion plant expected in July 2022.

The $2.79-billion build operate transfer (BOT) Nghi Son 2 power plant (NS2) in north-central Thanh Hoa province has officially commenced construction. NS2 is a 1,330 MW thermal power plant being built by Doosan and scheduled for completion in July 2022.

NS2PC is a Vietnamese company formed by the Marubeni Corporation of Japan and the Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) of Korea to invest in and operate the NS2 project. To launch the project NS2PC made an initial payment of $170 million to Doosan on June 24.

Thanh Hoa province is some 200 km south of Hanoi and the plant will produce the power needed to continue fueling Vietnam’s remarkable economic growth and development. For perspective, NS2 will generate enough electricity to power an additional 6.8 million four-person households in Vietnam and will improve living standards and economic opportunity around the country.

The construction of the NS2 power plant will feature two separate high-tech, high-efficiency 665 MW supercritical boilers and high-efficiency turbines and generating units. The two units will be constructed side-by-side but be independent, to allow for greater flexibility and efficiency.

Since 2012, Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction has won contracts worth more than $6 billion to build the Mong Duong 2, Song Hau 1, and Vinh Tan 4 thermal power projects in Vietnam. Doosan Heavy Industries Vietnam employs thousands of Vietnamese workers and has played an important role in the development of the country’s engineering sector and its economic growth.
